About Me

I was born in Maracay- Aragua Venezuela in 1974. I graduated as a Production Engineer in 1996 from the Simon Bolivar University in Venezuela and with an MBA from Tulane University in 2004. Although my career is not related to fine art I have always had a passion for art. I have only taken some formal art classes at Tulane University and more recently at the New Orleans academy of fine arts

About My Art Work:

In 2004 I created my first oil painting and since then I have kept painting in my free time. My canvases reflect the influences of the cities where I have spent most of my life (Maracay and Caracas in Venezuela and New Orleans in the USA) as well as the people who have been a major part of my life, especially my family and friends. All of my paintings have bright colors and I would describe them as bold pieces; this is probably the result of my Latin American roots. My favorite subjects are related to tropical scenes that are the direct reflection of my trips to beach and the tropical rainy jungles of Venezuela. These excursions started as a child when my parents took me to different vacation destinations in Venezuela, and have continued during my adult life including trips to exotic islands in the Caribbean and the Pacific. Some of the places that bring me special memories are the Henry Pittier National Park close to Maracay, the island of Margarita, both in Venezuela, and the hills and islands of the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand. Some of the themes that I commonly include in my paintings are exotic fruits, leaves and plants, and tropical landscapes. From my time in New Orleans I have created pieces that expose the beautiful architecture of the French Quarter and the vibrant atmosphere and customs of this wonderful city. More recently I have begun to develop pieces that reflect my religious beliefs with representations of the Virgin Mary, saints and religious icons in general that are an important part of the Catholic religion.

Exhibits:

I have participated in several art exhibits organized by the consulate of Venezuela in New Orleans: Hecho a Mano III (2006); Hecho a Mano IV (2007);Hecho a Mano V (2008). This last exhibit was organized between the consulate of Venezuela and the McKenna museum of African American art in New Orleans. Poydras Home art show, November 2008 J.W.
